Medal by William Wyon, silver, London, 1848, diameter 36 cm. It was introduced in 1840 to honour those who participated in naval battles in the period 1793-1840. Face A: Head of Queen Victoria and the inscription “VICTORIA REGINA 1848”. Side B: Britain, in the form of a woman, holding a trident and sitting on a seahorse. The horizontal metal bar indicates the naval battle in which the honoree took part. This medal was awarded to John Cook, a volunteer from Plymouth, who served in HMS Talbot.
