Mantel clock with philhellenic subject
A very elegant and rare mantel clock in bronze of the early 19th century, from France with a philhellenic subject. It depicts the Greek heroine Laskarina Bouboulina. Bouboulina was the best-known feminine figure of the Greek struggle internationally since 1821, and her form was presented on many occasions in European art. In fact, the French launched in her honor, a hairstyle with a scarf on the head, known as “boubouli”.
