This fully illustrated study covers the development of painting in the Greek world from the Bronze Age (3rd–2nd millennium BC) through to the Roman era (2nd–3rd c. AD).It offers a systematic survey of all major surviving works under the light of ancient textual evidence, contemporary scholarship, and recent breakthroughs in the study of the classical world. A special section is dedicated to ancient philosophical and historical views on aesthetics as well as some persistent problems in Greek archaeology.
