The painting shows a scene from a slave market of Greeks during the Turkish occupation. The slavery and trade of Christian-Greek slaves by the Turks was particularly widespread during the Turkish occupation. This issue had shocked the public opinion of the civilized world and was at the basis of the Philhellenic movement internationally. Many fundraisers were carried out in the 1820s, but also much later, to redeem Greek slaves and allow them to return free to Greece.
