Description
The volume contains the Proceedings of the International Conference on the time, life and work of the first two Mavrokordatos, Alexander and Nikolaos. The trigger for the organization of the Conference was the important position of the two scholars in the so-called “Democracy of Letters”, in addition to their presence at the forefront of political events in Europe in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Although historians have enough material to research and comment on their life and work within the Ottoman Empire and their role in shaping the modern Greek national consciousness, it is very important that the work they left is investigated also philologically, something which contributes decisively (even at an early stage) to the formation of the modern Greek narrative short story, both fictional / literary and historical or philosophical. Also, on an ideological level, they introduce modern ideology into modern Greek thought and promote the ideas of the still shaping European Enlightenment.
